Laser Cataract Removal

Cleaning Your Lenses

When smudges or dirt appear on your glasses’ lenses, what do you typically do? You might choose to ignore the smudge and look through it. If the smudge isn’t impairing your vision, you can probably still go about your day or complete whatever task you’re working on before you clean your lenses. Maybe your vision isn’t totally clear, but you can bide your time. However, if the dirt or greasy fingerprint proves too large to ignore, you might have to clean your glasses right away.

Cataracts Affect Your Lenses

A cataract is similar to the smudge or fingerprint on your corrective lenses. Your eyes actually have a lens, you just can’t see it. It’s clear, and sits over the retina, focusing light on the retina, which then sends images to your brain for processing. As you age, proteins build up on your eye’s lens, impeding your sight. Just like the smudge on your glasses, some cataracts are less obstructive than others. Unfortunately, when cataracts start to impair your vision and affect your life, they can’t just be cleaned off the lens. They need to be removed using laser cataract surgery.

Laser Cataract Removal

From Beverly Hills to small towns across the U.S., laser cataract surgery removes the old, cloudy lens of your eye. Once the old cataract is removed, a new lens is implanted in your eye. This lens, called an intraocular lens or IOL, does exactly what your old lens did – focuses light on the retina. Modern technology has refined laser cataract removal in Beverly Hills and other cities, making it a short, effective procedure that can improve your vision with minimal recovery time.

Procedure Details

According to the National Eye Institute, cataract removal is one of the most common surgeries performed in the U.S. Your eye is numbed, and a laser is used to make a small incision to the side of your cornea. In laser cataract surgery – which is available in Beverly Hills and other cities – a laser can make this incision, which increases accuracy as well as recovery time. The cloudy lens is typically broken up and then removed, often with an ultrasonic probe or another substance that breaks down the lens. Next, an IOL replaces the old lens, and your surgeon closes up the incision. With laser cataract removal, however, the incision is usually self-healing.

Different Types of IOL’s

There are currently several types of IOL’s to choose from, some that can even correct presbyopia – which forces you to wear reading glasses to see close-up as you get older. Monofocal lenses have one range of focus, either near or far. Multifocal lenses allow your lens to adjust light at a variety of distances. In Beverly Hills, you can choose from Crystalens, TECNIS multifocal lenses and many others that can not only clear your sight, but also allow you to see better than you ever thought possible.
