When Is The Right Time To Get Cataract Surgery?

Cataracts are an extremely common condition especially if you are over 65 years old. When you are over the age of 65 you should be having your eyes examined at least once a year.  Fortunately, many people who have cataracts or may be developing a cataract, can still live an ordinary life and they usually feel as if the cataracts aren’t even there.  But unfortunately, this is not the case for everyone.

Do I have a cataract?

Do you have any problems with your vision?  When driving at night do the headlights of other cars daze you?  Do you see halos around bright lights like streetlights?  Do you have any spots in your vision?  Is your vision ever cloudy?  If you answered yes to these questions you may have a cataract.

Do I need cataract surgery?

Just because you have a cataract doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to have it removed. The decision o removing it and having the surgery is ultimately up to you.  If you have a cataract but you do not experience the symptoms such as blurred vision, or any other disruptions, then cataract surgery is unnecessary.

On the other hand, if you have any disruptions to your life and the symptoms are severe, such as difficulty reading, problems at work, glare when driving at night, or problems keeping up with other tasks, then you should consider surgery. Don’t let cataracts diminish your quality of life and speak with your eye doctor right away.

If you do have problems don’t delay!

Don’t let the word “surgery” put you off.  It is a very simple procedure that takes under fifteen minutes and with recent advances in technology, such as femtosecond cataract surgery, the procedure is not very invasive.

The technology used for cataract surgery has progressed so much in the last decade, which makes surgery easier then ever before.  It used to be that cataracts had to be developed completely before they could be removed. The technology is now so advanced that this isn’t the case and the cataract can be removed as soon as your problems begin.

Each person is different, and everyone’s eyes are different. That being said, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to cataract surgery and when you decide to have surgery needs to be discussed with your doctor and the severity of your diagnosis.  Self-diagnosis is recommended in many circumstances, especially cataracts. Talk to your doctor in order to be guided in the right choice.

Cataracts isn’t something that will disappear on their own.  In areas such as Africa, cataracts are the leading cause of blindness. Do not take this risky, especially when treatment is so readily available for you. For cataract surgery in Beverly Hills, check out www.beverlyhillsvision.com now.
