Eye Disorders

According to the CDC, “Approximately 11 million Americans aged 12 years and older could improve their vision through proper refractive correction.”

Refractive errors are the most frequent eye problems people struggle with in the United States. Refractive errors include myopia or near-sightedness, hyperopia – farsightedness, astigmatism which causes distorted vision at all distances, and presbyopia that can occur between the ages of 40 and 50. Presbyopia causes one to loose the ability to focus up close, read letters of the phone book, and can cause one to hold a book farther away to see clearly. Many of these eye disorders can be corrected by eyeglasses, contact lenses, or in some cases, corrective eye surgery.

Many eye diseases have no early symptoms and may be painless. Often times people who have an eye disorder may see no change in their vision until the disease has become quite advanced and has begun to impair vision regularly.

The single best way to protect your vision is to schedule regular eye examinations with a professional. Of course, between examinations, if you notice a change in your vision – or you think your eye may be injured in any way – contact your eye care professional immediately and seek the proper treatment.
